About R|Artist Residency
R|Artist Residency: Sub Tropic is a 20-week artist residency designed for early-career creative practitioners. It offers studio space, operational support, opportunities to build a profile, and a materials budget of $1,200.
The Refinery is offering two residencies in 2025:
1 March – 14 July
15 July – 30 November
March - July 2025
July - November 2025
The successful candidate will be an early-career creative practitioner eager to experiment within their practice and create new work. They will be committed to sharing their progress with industry professionals and peers, culminating in a public outcome hosted by The Refinery.
What's on offer:
Sub Tropic studio: a large 34-square-metre studio space featuring concrete floors and a wet area equipped with a tap and sink, suitable for a variety of artistic practices
$1,200 materials budget
Open studio/ public showing opportunity.
R|Artist Residency: Sub Tropic applications close Monday, 3 February at 12pm.
Late submissions will not be considered.
Applications must include:
Completion of the application form
An artist CV (up to two pages)
Examples of previous work provided as a PDF, consisting of 5-10 images with appropriate citations and captions.

You will:
Be an early career creative practitioner seeking to experiment within your practice
Produce new work-in-progress during the residency
Be committed to utilising the space regularly during the residency period
Be committed to discussing and publicly presenting your
work-in-progress to industry professionals and peers during the residency period.
