New Programs, Big Opportunities - The Refinery 2024

It’s been a hot minute since SCCA launched the expanded vision for The Refinery back in February. The year to date has been a whirlwind. Not only have we created three new impactful employment opportunities to support the arts scene—our Executive Director, Programs and Communications Coordinator, and Project Assistant (the dream team!)—but our suite of programs has burst out into the world at lightning speed.

Our creative business incubator program, known for the past six years as The Refinery, has evolved. We’re now more than just one program; we’re a whole suite—an ecosystem, if you will—of exciting professional development opportunities for creatives.

This year, R|6.0 saw 11 creative businesses expand their entrepreneurial skills and pitch before key figures in the creative industry. We welcomed The Path into our offerings, a program known to be the launch pad of the region's most exciting new work. Additionally, our field trip to K’gari allowed participants to broaden their skills using cutting-edge creative technologies, on an academically guided journey where art, technology, and the environment collided.

We have so much more in store. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Artist Residencies

  • Masterclasses

  • Talks

  • Short Specialist Programs

  • Research and Development Opportunities

Our mission remains the same: to nurture a pipeline of technologically engaged creative practitioners ready for new markets and audiences.

If you missed the launch event back in February, don’t worry! You can live vicariously through the highlights captured in this video by Timothy Birch.

The Refinery is SCCA’s platform of professional development programs designed to support creative practitioners working at the intersection of art, technology, environment and design.
